A closed door and a locked door are different
Say whether the door simply latched shut or was locked with a key. Tell us if a key is on the inside, whether the handle moves and whether there is another authorised entrance. A timber door with a rim latch and a uPVC multipoint door may need different approaches, and we'll choose the right method for your door.
If a person is in immediate danger, contact emergency services rather than wait for a locksmith quote. Otherwise stay somewhere safe while you check whether a household member or authorised keyholder has a spare.
For tenants and shared buildings
If you rent, contact your landlord or managing agent where appropriate before authorising work. Explain whether the locked door is your flat door or a shared entrance. A communal access system may be managed separately and should not be altered without permission.
Ask what proof of your right to enter will be needed. If documents are inside, mention this when you enquire. Give the correct entrance, floor and any intercom restrictions without sharing access codes in an initial public message.
Agree the scope before attendance
Send the postcode, door material and lock type if known. State how urgent the situation is and whether you can wait for an agreed appointment. We'll confirm the price before we set off.
Ask what access work is proposed, whether replacement parts might be needed and how additional work would be agreed. The appropriate access method and attendance are agreed for your door and circumstances.
Your questions
Will the lock need replacing?
Not necessarily, but the options depend on the door, lock and circumstances. We always aim to get you in with the least disruption.
Can you open a communal entrance?
Describe the access system and who manages it first. We'll let you know if it's something we can help with.
